Lord John sent his son, Tobias to study at Oxford with the following instructions:
“My son, at the end of each school year you will be required to present to me a detailed financial report of your expenses. And as I recall my student days, I would ask you – in your report, please refer to your spending sprees with girls as ‘hunting’.”
At the end of the first year of his father Tobias sent a detailed report, as in the “hunting” section he reported 800 pounds.
“He’s still young” – Lord John said to himself forgivingly -” he’ll learn”
At the end of the second year the report is almost the same, only in the ‘hunting’ money is now 1500 pounds.
“Well … – the lord thought – “a bit too much, but I hope he’ll be wiser next year.”
At the end of the third year Tobias sent a report like the previous two, as in the ‘hunting’ it was added additional expenses with a note: “Rifle repair – 2500 pounds.”
Lord John leaving early in the morning to go hunting, to his butler:
“James, I’ll be back for dinner.”
However, he comes back for lunch.
James:
“You came back for more bullets, Sir?”
“No, more dogs.”
